6 Tips on Effective Note-taking

Have you experienced being on a meeting and your task is to write down the minutes of the discussion? Surely, it’s a big responsibility as you’re the one liable for listing all the crucial points needed for a project.

It can be a challenge to perform this task, but you don’t have to worry. Here are some tricks and tips on how to take notes effectively.

1. Be prepared.
Before the meeting, you should create a plan on how you’ll do your notations. Will you have it on bullets or numbers? Or have it free-flowing? It may also be a helpful option for you to create diagrams, or maps of ideas to make things easier to understand and remember. It depends solely on your choice and the nature of the data. What’s important is, you know what to do when the meeting starts.

2. Be alert to main points.
Everything that you hear and read is important. On the other hand, you need to identify the main points to purposely save time. Always remember to look at the gist of the meeting. This will help you save time and effort. This is also important especially when the speaker has a lot of things to discuss in front of his or her audience.

3. Be mindful of keywords or short sentences.
Every note should consist of keywords and short sentences. Track the speaker’s main points, and look for keywords that support the main topic. This is helpful when you want to reread the topic and the points that the speaker discussed.

4. Be accurate.
In every document, readers look for facts and information. Take notes accurately to make sure that the things you’re jotting down are correct to its sense. One method is to quote a speaker correctly. This is to prevent plagiarism from any means.

5. Be simple.
Be direct when taking down notes. It makes you better understand things without taking too much time. It’s better to keep it short and simple. Keep it condensed so that you can read the text as rapidly as possible. It’s also better to use your own words; nevertheless, try to stick on the meaning.

6. Be resourceful of using a clean paper.
In order to understand the text, it’s better to use a clean sheet of paper. In addition, you need to find out how you can structure your points in a comprehensible manner. Always remember your teacher who taught you how to write an outline. Always think of simplicity and organization.

Every time you finish writing, it’s good to remember these six tips on effective note-taking. It makes sense in the business world or any endeavors that you’re in.
